This piece hit home for me, although my mother was born in the US. I used to think it was more of a generational thing, as she’s all but fully assimilated into white/American culture. But I realize more and more that our disagreements stem from having inherently different values, especially things like this. I see how she’s so unhappy and unfulfilled in her work, but prioritizes that security and predictability above all else. I can’t live like that…and thus, we butt heads often and are getting to the point where we rarely discuss my professional success. Thanks for sharing your story.
