Melissa — I loved this piece. Thank you for sharing your family and cultural history, this is something I’m infinitely curious about as a dietitian and always eager to learn more about.

I agree, the whitewashing of veganism has been an interesting phenomenon to witness. I see it leading people down the path of orthorexia and disordered eating, all in the name of wellness. Lots of people are influenced by less-than-credible sources or seeking a “holier than thou” approach to eating and it’s troubling. I don’t have a lot of answers but it did force me to reflect on my own food choices and how I eat.

I ultimately decided a different route was right for me, but I’ll never be one to judge someone’s personal preferences. I just hope those choices are informed but truth and not fear or misinformation or comparisons. Thanks again for sharing this, great story!
